New Zealand Sugar Company has its main operational and distribution base at Chelsea Refinery. The company produces, markets, distributes and sells approximately 230,000 tonnes of sugar annually.

New Zealand Sugar’s current gas contract was due to expire, and with the savings that can be made in energy consumption, it was an ideal opportunity to go to the market through an RFP process to select a supplier for gas beyond the current contract.

Given increasing energy costs and New Zealand Sugar’s significant spend in this area; the renegotiation of the contract was critical. New Zealand Sugar wanted to secure a stable gas supply at a competitive market rate.

Management Toolbox worked with New Zealand Sugar to issue an RFP document to a number of energy suppliers. The end result was that New Zealand Sugar was able to implement improvements in its gas management policy, and significantly reduced the annual cost of gas.
